This guide outlines the steps involved in the calibration process for the Excalibur Sport and Excalibur Sport Pedal Force Measurement (PFM) ergometers. Lode and Logemas recommend calibration ergometers annually to ensure their reliability and validity, regardless of usage or the type of testing conducted.
1. Pre-calibration set-up
Preparing your Excalibur Sport or Excalibur Sport PFM for calibration is straightforward. Please ensure the following prerequisites are met:
- The ergometer is in working condition
- 3 meters of clear space surrounding the ergometer
- Easy access to a power outlet
The Logemas engineer will supply the following equipment:
- Calibrator Ultra and all associated equipment
- Lode Device Manager software
Once the prerequisites are met, the Logemas engineer will initiate the calibration process. Each calibration typically takes 2 to 3 hours, with a maximum of three calibrations performed each day.
2. Pre- connection safety check
Before proceeding, the Logemas engineer will conduct a comprehensive physical inspection of the ergometer to confirm it is safe for use. This inspection includes:
- Input/Output Plate and Cords: Ensuring integrity and proper functionality.
- Handlebar and Seat Adjustment Mechanisms: Checking for smooth operation and secure fittings.
- Display Screen: Verifying functionality and visibility.
- Pedals and Cranks: Inspecting for wear, damage, or defects.
- Body Casing: Checking for cracks, dents, or other structural issues.
- Communication Systems: Ensuring proper connectivity and applying any necessary updates.
3. Calibration Process
Once the ergometer has passed the safety inspection, the calibration process begins:
1) Connection: The calibrator is connected via an axle to the crank location.
2) Initial Tests: Using the Lode Device Manager, a series of Power (Watt) and RPM tests are conducted. A preliminary calibration report is generated, highlighting any discrepancies. Variance exceeding the allowable 3% margin will be flagged in red or orange.
Example Initial Calibration Report:
3) Adjustment: The Logemas engineer will adjust the internal settings of the ergometer to align recorded measurements with accurate values.
4) Secondary Calibration: A second series of tests is conducted to validate the adjustments. A final calibration report is generated.
Example Final Calibration Report:
4. Post-calibration
Upon successful calibration, the Logemas engineer will email two files:
1) A PDF which includes a final rating from A to F, photos of physical issues found, and a Calibration Verification Report sheet
2) A detailed Excel report summarising the calibration results
Congratulations! Your Excalibur Sport or Excalibur Sport PFM ergometer is now calibrated and ready to provide precise and reliable test results.
