How to connect ergometer to Pedal Force Measurement

In this guide, we will show you how to connect your Excalibur or Brachumera Sport – Pedal Force Measurement (PFM) to the Lode Ergometry Manager (LEM) on your PC. For the LEM connection and user guide, please click here *Hyperlink to LEM guide*

1. Pre- connection checklist

Before beginning the PFM connection, ensure you have the following:

  • A Lode Excalibur or Brachumera Pedal Force Measurement Model
  • A PC with the latest model of LEM installed (including Lode LEM licence)
  • The correct cables (e.g., Power Supply for ergometer, Lode Network Module RJ45 Cable or USB Serial Convertor, depending on which model of ergometer you have)
  • Lode USB-PFM dongle

2. Ergometer – PC connection

  • Connect the ergometer to the PC using the Lode Network Module RJ45 connection cable or RS232 cable (depending on your model of ergometer).
  • Plug the Bluetooth USB-PFM dongle into the PC
  • Turn on ergometer, and select Main Menu → Terminal → Network Module
  • Turn on the PC, ensure that Bluetooth connections are ON, and open the LEM software
  • Allow LEM to scan and connect the ergometer. If LEM autoscan doesn’t find the ergometer, open the ‘Device’ tab, and rescan for ergometers.

The ergometer should now be connected and ready to use!

3. Further troubleshooting

If there are still issues connecting the ergometer via Bluetooth, there is a chance the PC has connected with the PFM bluetooth. To correct this, the following can be attempted:

 Bluetooth Settings in Windows

  • Turn on the ergometer, and make sure it is connected to the PC correctly.
  • Open Bluetooth & Devices in the Windows settings
  • Look for the Lode PFM in the list of connected devices
  • If it is listed and connected, please disconnect or remove device

Remove the Excalibur within LEM

  • Open LEM on the PC, and open the device list.
  • Select and remove the ergometer, using the red cross.
  • Close and re-open LEM to ensure there is no ergometer selected. If the ergometer is still showing in the device list, try to remove it again.

Rescan the devices in LEM

  • Once the ergometer is removed, start a new scan within LEM.
  • Wait approximately 2-3 minutes for the ergometer to reconnect automatically. The PFM is scanned last, so please ensure that the scan is ‘complete’ until closing the device window.

The ergometer and PFM should now be connected to the LEM software. Additionally, there should be some new symbols (Bluetooth logo, red PFM pedal adjustment) beside the photo of the Excalibur.

  • The connection process may differ slightly depending on the version of the Lode Excalibur or Brachumera PFM and the LEM software version.
